Cameroon Marks National Day, Celebrating Unification from 1972 Referendum Vote
On May 20, 1972, Cameroonians cast their votes in a pivotal referendum that would redefine their nation’s structure. This decision led to the transformation from a federal system to a unitary state, marking a significant step toward national unity. To commemorate this momentous event, May 20 was declared National Day, also known as Unitary State Day, and has been celebrated annually ever since.
The journey to this unification began with the end of World War I when the former German colony of Kamerun was divided between France and Britain. French Cameroun gained independence on January 1, 1960, followed by British Southern Cameroons, which joined the Republic of Cameroon on October 1, 1961, forming a federal republic. However, the dual system presented challenges in governance and national cohesion. Under President Ahmadou Ahidjo’s leadership, the 1972 referendum was initiated to streamline the government into a unitary state, aiming to foster a stronger sense of national identity and unity.
Today, National Day is a vibrant celebration across Cameroon. In the capital city of Yaoundé, the President presides over grand parades featuring military displays, traditional dances, and performances by schoolchildren. Similar festivities occur in regional capitals, led by governors and local officials. The streets are adorned with the national colors—green, red, and yellow—symbolizing unity, sovereignty, and the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Communities come together to reflect on their shared history and aspirations for the future.
The significance of National Day extends beyond the festivities. It serves as a reminder of the nation’s journey toward unity and the ongoing efforts to maintain harmony among its diverse cultural and linguistic groups. The day encourages citizens to embrace their collective identity while respecting the unique traditions that contribute to Cameroon’s rich tapestry.
As Cameroonians at home and in the diaspora celebrate National Day, they honor the resilience and determination that have shaped their nation. The holiday stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and the continuous pursuit of a cohesive and prosperous Cameroon.
